8 hours and I’ll be on my way to Afghanistan
So my week has been rather stressful to say the least. Monday I was off work because I was leaving for Afghanistan on Tuesday at 2:45 am…I know, terrible. So I packed and packed and packed all Monday, ok thats a lie. I may have put off packing until like 10 pm…4 hours before I’m supposed to leave. So I packed and ended up getting like 50 minutes of sleep before I had to go. Looking back I think not sleeping would have been better, oh well. So I left Tuesday, picked up my guns and went to the Airport. I got there and waited 90 mins for the stupid ticket customer counter people service thing to open so I could check my bags. After that I went and sat at the terminal for another 40 minutes until we finally boarded the plane. I got a good 20 min nap in on the hour long flight to ATL. Yeah, I’m cool enough to say ATL instead of Atlanta. Anyway, I ate there and caught my next flight to Norfolk VA. I sat in the USO, which is the military reception center, and waited for them to tell me what to do next. They finally sent me to the naval base which is like 20 minutes from the airport. When we got to the gate the guy asked if we had any weapons on the bus. I raised my hand and sure enough we had to wait for an escort…which was a good 30 minute wait. Ok, so we got the escort, went to the mini airport on base. I talked to the ticket people and theysaid yup, you leave out of here….on Friday. What The Efff! So I left there and found a hotel. Throughout this whole adventure I met a few other people in the same boat as me. So we asked around and tried to find out what there is to do around town. We were told to go to downtown norlfolk and try some clubs. Seeing how our bags were checked and we had no clothes we had to find some regular clothes…we werea ll in our uniform. So we started asking where to get clothes, EVERY person directed us off base to some shop thing, idk. Anyway, I’m going on 35 hours without sleep so I stop paying attention and just follow the other people I was with. We start walking around the base like a bunch of fools and finally find a bus stop that is supposed to take us to the shop thing. Now, I have NEVER taken “public transportation” anywhere in my life before…..after that experience…I never will again. I felt so poor, and we all know no one likes poor people. So we get to the shop thing and they actually have some decent clothes. I got some puma shoes, a lucky shirt, a couple Ed Hardy shirts, and a couple pairs of jeans. All in all I spent like $280 there. All for 2 days of clothing, but w/e. So we ;eave and head back to the hotel. We decide that we are going to go donwtown and see whats happening. We end up getting a cab and heading out. Now, I’ve never had beer on 40 hours w/o sleep, but it was kind of cool. its like starting out with a few shots. Anywho, we head downtown and it sucks. There is nothing going on. We decide to ask around and see where everything is at. When I say there is nothing going on I mean ARE Kansas has a better night life than that city had. So we head down to the beach front and end up having a bad ass cab driver. We get there and there are just crazy women everywhere. Now, I’m kind of in a relationship…I know, kind of sounds weird but go with it, so I was just there for the drinks. but if I wasnt, this place would be a prime place to pick up some spare STD’s. There were floosies everywhere. the people I went with were pretty excited. To skip ahead we go to a few different bars, meet a few different girls, we just end up having fun. The next day I sleep in until 4pm. I get a call from the people I went out with the night before and they ask if I want to go out again, I decline and end up playing yahoo spades and watching the OC all night. Today has basically been the same routine. I check out at 10pm and board my plane at like 12:01 am tomorrow. I was kind of anxious to go, but after a 3 day break to unwind and stop worrying about it, I am ready to go. Apparently the base I’m going to got bombed like a week ago and 10 people died, so that kind of sucks. I guess it doesnt seem as real since I’m not there yet, who know. I think I’ll be ok there, I think everything happens for a reason. Point of the long ass story being, I had fun before I left…oh, and I leave in like 7 horus. I am supposed to have internet over there but we’ll see. We better, its the only reason I went out and bought a new laptop!
